LOOK BENEATH THE SURFACE

7 Sneaky Sources of Sugar (and What to Choose Instead)

One of the biggest shifts I see in our clients’ health journeys happens when they start reading food labels – not out of fear or obsession, but with curiosity.

Because when you realize that many of the foods marketed as “healthy” are actually packed with hidden sugars, inflammatory oils, and preservatives… you get to make more empowered, aligned choices.

This isn’t about cutting everything out. It’s about becoming more conscious of what you’re putting into your body – and choosing ingredients that nourish you from the inside out.

Below are 7 everyday items where sugar loves to hide (even the crunchy ones get surprised sometimes!) . plus cleaner, more supportive options that won’t spike your blood sugar, throw off your hormones, or leave you feeling depleted.

1. Instant Oatmeal Packets

These are often loaded with cane sugar, natural flavors, and inflammatory oils. Even the organic ones can be misleading.

Swap it with:
Organic sprouted oats you cook yourself. Add a spoonful of nut butter, cinnamon, and fresh fruit for natural sweetness without the sugar crash.

Clean brands to try:
One Degree Organics Sprouted Oats or Thrive Market Organic Rolled Oats.

2. Non-Dairy Milks

Most store-bought almond, oat, or soy milks are sweetened and full of additives like gums, synthetic vitamins, and seed oils.

Swap it with:
Homemade nut or seed milk (just organic nuts/seeds, filtered water, and a pinch of salt), or opt for brands that skip the junk.

Clean brands to try:
Three Trees, MALK Organics, or your own homemade almond or hemp milk.

3. Nut Butters

Many nut butters sneak in added sugar, palm oil, and preservatives – even the “natural” ones.

Swap it with:
Single-ingredient nut butters made with just organic nuts and salt. Bonus points if they come in glass jars!

Clean brands to try:
Georgia Grinders, Artisana Organics, or make your own from soaked, blended nuts.

4. Dried Fruit

Sounds healthy, right? But most are coated in sugar, preservatives (like sulfites), and even processed oils.

Swap it with:
Organic dried fruit with no added sugar – or even better, opt for fresh, in-season fruit with all the fiber, hydration, and natural enzymes intact.

Clean brands to try:
RIND Snacks or Made in Nature “No Sugar Added” dried mango or dates.

5. Granola Bars

Even the ones marketed as healthy often contain brown rice syrup, agave, or other hidden sweeteners along with inflammatory oils.

Swap it with:
Homemade bars using ingredients like nuts, seeds, dates, coconut oil, and cacao. Or look for truly clean store-bought options with short, whole-food ingredient lists.

Clean brands to try:
Paleovalley Superfood Bars or Elemental Superfood Seedbars.

6. Flavored Yogurt

Most are ultra-pasteurized, stripped of natural probiotics, and packed with sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Swap it with:
Organic, grass-fed plain yogurt. Add your own berries, raw honey, or cinnamon for flavor.

Clean brands to try:
Alexandre Family Farm, Kalona Supernatural, White Mountain Foods, or Coconut Cult (dairy-free probiotic option).

7. Salad Dressings

Most conventional dressings are filled with canola oil, sugar, gums, and “natural flavors” that aren’t so natural.

Swap it with:
Make your own in minutes using organic olive oil or avocado oil, raw apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, and herbs.

Clean brands to try:
Primal Kitchen (just be sure to check the label – not all are created equal), or your own homemade version in a mason jar.

The Bottom Line

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about becoming aware – and choosing ingredients that support your body, your hormones, your gut, and your energy levels.

When you start to fuel your body with truly clean, nourishing foods, everything starts to shift – your skin, your mood, your sleep, and your relationship with food.

So here’s your challenge:
