LOOK BENEATH THE SURFACE

How you eat, not only what you eat, affects your digestion

When it comes to nutrition and your health goals, many of us focus solely on what we eat. However, HOW we eat is just as important as what we eat. Our gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) works best when our mind and body are calm.

One of the most critical factors in GI tract function is our parasympathetic nervous system. This system is responsible for our “rest and digest” state, which allows our bodies to focus on digestion and absorption. When we’re in a state of stress or anxiety, our sympathetic nervous system is activated, which causes our body to go into “fight or flight” mode. In this state, blood flow is directed away from the digestive system, which can lead to slower digestion and absorption.

So, how does how we eat impact our parasympathetic nervous system? Well, when we eat in a rushed or stressed state, our body perceives this as a threat, and our sympathetic nervous system is activated. This can lead to decreased digestion, bloating, and discomfort. On the other hand, when we eat in a relaxed state, our parasympathetic nervous system is activated, allowing for optimal digestion and absorption of nutrients.

Here are some tips for how to eat mindfully and support your parasympathetic nervous system:

  1. Eat in a calm environment: Eating in a relaxed environment can help you stay present and mindful while eating. Try turning off distractions such as TV or phone notifications and focus on your food and the people you’re eating with.
  2. Chew your food: Chewing your food thoroughly can aid in digestion and help your body absorb nutrients more efficiently.
  3. Eat slowly: Taking your time while eating can help you tune into your body’s hunger and fullness signals, preventing overeating.
  4. Take deep breaths: Taking deep breaths before and during meals can help activate your parasympathetic nervous system and promote relaxation.
  5. Practice gratitude: Taking a moment to express gratitude before a meal can help you approach eating with a positive mindset and reduce stress.

So, the next time you sit down to eat, take a deep breath, slow down, and enjoy your food mindfully.
